The district of Metchosin is in hot water with non-profits that own property in the municipality.
Mid-September, Metchosin councillors voted to scale back the property tax exemptions they offer the seven charities that own property in the municipality.
“It was really shocking for us to be honest,” said Penny Stone, founder of the Victoria Human Society, which just recently acquired a property in Metchosin.
“It takes away from non-profits ability to do things.”
For the Victoria Humane Society, it means a sudden reshuffling of funds, and $4,000 less going towards the pets they help save and rehome.
For Metchosin’s St. Mary’s Church, the decision could render them insolvent within a year or two.
“It is quite likely that the 153 year history of St. Mary’s Church could end,” said Ed Benni
