With the cold weather about here, Indiana Michigan Power is urging customers to remember a few safety tips to avoid fires in the winter.

I&M Spokesperson Schnee Doyle tells us with more power being drawn in the home, electrical cords should be checked for fraying and items should be unplugged when not in use. Don’t use extension cords with large appliances and watch how you use space heaters and electric blankets.

“ Make sure that you use extreme caution,” Doyle said. “ Please inspect the heating devices regularly and do not use if the wires are frayed or damaged. Also unplug a space heater or the electric blanket when you’re not using them and never sleep with them on.”
