US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed not to purchase much oil from Russia. This claim was made during Diwali celebrations at the White House, where Trump expressed his positive relationship with Modi. "I spoke to Prime Minister Modi today and we just have a very good relationship. He’s not going to buy much oil from Russia. He wants to see that war end as much as I do," Trump said, referring to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump's comments come amid his previous accusations that India is buying large quantities of Russian oil and profiting from reselling it. He mentioned, "India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian oil, they are then, for much of the oil purchased, selling it on the open market for big profits." He indicated that due to these actions, he plans to raise tariffs on India significantly.
During the conversation, Trump also extended warm wishes to the people of India and highlighted discussions about trade. He noted, "Although we did talk a little while ago about let’s have no wars with Pakistan. The fact that trade was involved, I was able to talk about that. And we have no war with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing."
India has not officially responded to Trump's claims regarding oil purchases. Previously, New Delhi has emphasized its role as a significant importer of oil and gas, stating that its import policies are focused on safeguarding the interests of Indian consumers in a volatile energy market.
In addition to discussing India, Trump addressed tariffs on China, stating that as of November 1st, tariffs on China would reach about 155%. He expressed a desire for better relations with China but criticized past US administrations for allowing unfavorable trade practices. Trump concluded by mentioning the financial benefits of tariffs, saying, "We’re getting hundreds of billions, even trillions of dollars paid into the United States... We'll start paying off debt."
