A NSW Police officer has been charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm after the arrest of former federal Greens candidate Hannah Thomas in Sydney's south-west.

Ms Thomas was taking part in a pro-Palestinian protest in Belmore when she allegedly was punched by a male officer in June, causing damage to her eye.

At the time, police told ABC News "no issues" had been identified, but the matter was later referred to the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission for a critical incident investigation.

A 33-year-old senior constable attached to a specialist command was charged with one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in September.

On Wednesday, the man was issued a court attendance notice for the additional, more serious, charge.
