QUINCY (WGEM) - Across Illinois and the country, many classrooms started the school year without a critical piece of the educational puzzle — a teacher.
One Quincy Public Schools (QPS) official said the personnel shortage has her losing sleep.
“I take every position here very personally, so any open position, it keeps me up at night — for sure," said Lisa Otten, personnel director at QPS.
Recent reports from the Illinois State Board of Education revealed modest progress in addressing the state’s teacher shortage, namely a 5.6% decrease in open teaching positions since the 2023-24 school year.
But for Otten, things seem to be progressing in the wrong direction.
