KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- One person is dead after they were hit by a car in Independence early Wednesday morning.

It happened on eastbound MO 78 Highway, west of 7 Highway, around 2:45 a.m. Police said a person was walking on the road when they were hit by a Ford Fusion.

They were taken to the hospital, where they later died. IPD is waiting to identity them until family has been notified.

The driver of the Ford stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
