On Dec. 15, 1791, the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution were ratified, forming what we know as the Bill of Rights. The First Amendment states, among other things, that Congress shall make no law abridging “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.”
In the days leading up to the latest “No Kings” rally, some loud voices on the right tried to turn the demonstrations into a carnival of anti-Americanism bordering on armed insurrection. What we actually saw Saturday were millions of people across the country — including thousands on the Allen County Courthouse grounds — peacefully assembling to protest the sitting president and his policies. That’s about as American as it gets.
