A staple in the performing arts scene in Nanaimo has announced it will be permanently closing after 42 years.
The TheatreOne Performance Society voted to dissolve the society, saying the closures required during the height of COVID-19 put its financial situation into survival mode.
“We worked tirelessly to rebuild audiences and increase revenue through grants, donations, fundraising, and sponsorships—with great success—but in the end, it was too little, too late,” Michael Cade, the artistic and managing director of TheatreOne, said in a statement on its website.
TheatreOne had previously operated as The Vancouver Island Shakespeare Festival Society, Shakespeare Plus, and The Nanaimo Festival Heritage/Theatre Society, and throughout its 42 years had brought hundreds of theatre production
