OMAHA, Neb. —

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo announced its first orangutan pregnancy in more than a decade.

The zoo said Ruby, a 26-year-old Bornean orangutan, is expecting the infant in February 2026.

Officials added Ruby has been at the zoo since 2007 and this is her first pregnancy. The father, 23-year-old Denda, joined the zoo in 2024 with the opening of the reimagined Hubbard Orangutan Forest .

The zoo said the pregnancy was first detected through urine hormones and confirmed through voluntary transabdominal ultrasound.

Bornean orangutans are critically endangered due to habitat loss, deforestation, palm oil production, and illegal wildlife trade, according to officials.
