One person and a dog died early Wednesday morning after a house fire in Benton.

The fire broke out about 2:07 a.m. at the Pleasant Drive home, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the home fully engulfed in flames. Fire departments from five towns helped Benton’s crews get the fire under control.

During the fight, crews found someone dead inside, as well as a dead dog, Moss said Wednesday afternoon.

The body was taken to the Maine medical examiner’s office to determine a cause of death and for positive identification.

The fire remains under investigation.
