BUFFALO, N.Y. — Alex Lyon padded over to the visitors locker room inside KeyBank Center, casually clad in a sweatshirt, jeans and Birkenstocks. He had a little extra time to chat, as he was designated to back up in the evening after six straight starts.

With the Detroit Red Wings in town on Wednesday, Oct. 22, it was an opportunity for the affable, well-spoken Minnesotan to catch up with former teammates. Lyon is now making his home with the Buffalo Sabres , who snatched him up on July 1 of this past summer, as soon as free agency began. Lyon, 32, thought about staying with the Wings, who were interested, but it was clear he'd have more of an opportunity elsewhere.
