A stranded family was rescued on an island off Cape Cod after their boat caught fire, forcing them to swim to land, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The family was overdue from a trip they set off on on Friday, according to the Coast Guard. Their boat caught fire Monday and they were found Wednesday morning after sending out a mayday call — the son had found the boat's marine radio washed onto the beach on Naushon Island after walking along the beach.

Volunteers found them and rendered first aid, then a Coast Guard helicopter airlifted the three to Cape Cod Hospital — it wasn't immediately clear if any were hurt.

The family's vessel, the Third Wave, left Eel Pond in Falmouth on Friday and were expected back on Tuesday.
