LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Open rifle season has officially started in Louisiana, which is good news for hunters eager to get in deer stands. However, there are a few rifle safety tips to keep in mind before you start your hunt.
Glen Ducharme, a retired hunter’s education instructor with over 30 years of experience, says that it doesn’t matter if you are an avid hunter or a newbie to the woods; it’s easy to make a mistake. That mistake could involve the color orange.
“One cause of accidents in hunting is mistaking people for game. It’s a proven fact that the hunter orange and the blaze pink save lives,” Ducharme said.
Ducharme said that according to the law, hunting on public land requires you to wear 400 square inches of hunter orange on your head, chest, and back.
