In fact, if you are high in a tree stand hunting, and close enough to the cliffs overlooking the river, you can hear the rafters scream and shout as they navigate one of the famous rapids the Gauley is known for throughout the country and the whitewater community.

I have floated down the river, and when able between major rapids, I have peered up at the mountainside rim for a very different perspective of my cherished hunting grounds. As we whizzed by in the fast, fall-release current, I always try to take a mental image of the country from below to pair with the hundreds of mental images I have collected over nearly 25 years from the top.
