The ongoing government shutdown is impacting the Downtown Rescue Mission , a local nonprofit that provides essential services to the homeless community.
As the shutdown enters its fourth week, Jonathan Walsh, vice president of development at the mission, said the uncertainty is affecting their donor base, leading to a drop in donations. With Thanksgiving approaching, the mission is facing challenges in keeping its pantry stocked to serve those in need.
"We’ll have to reach out to the community and to ramp up the pantry because in addition to having two commercial kitchens, we provide bags of food to the community," Walsh said. "We’ll see our pantry, the shelves will just get depleted a lot faster because people aren't able to give at the level they were."
