FOXBORO — Put simply, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is connecting on passes he has no business completing.

The young quarterback is off to an incredible start in his second NFL season, hitting on a league-leading 75.2% of his passing attempts. He currently has the highest CPOE (completion percentage above expected) of any quarterback in a single season, as charted by NFL Next Gen Stats since 2018, with a plus-10.3% mark.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel chalked it up to “special talent” while noting that Maye’s receivers have helped, as well.

“Staying calm, the things that they’ve worked on and he’s practiced as far as when he’s on the move, to be able to still stay in phase, not open up his body or let things get loose, which would lead to an erratic or an errant throw,” Vrabel said.
