A 30-year-old Canadian man was convicted by a jury on all charges related to him starting a fire at his girlfriend’s home in Warren last year, destroying the home and killing her two cats.

Jesse Humphrey’s girlfriend was not home at the time, but he knew that her cats were in the building when he set it on fire.

After a five-day trial in Macomb County Circuit Court, a jury convicted Humphrey on Wednesday, Oct. 22, of two counts of second-degree arson, each a potential 20-year felony, and two counts of first-degree killing and torturing of animals, each a potential 10-year felony.

Humphrey was remanded to custody to await his sentencing.

The sentencing is set for Thursday, Dec. 4 at 8:30 a.m. before Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Toia.
