A man is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed in a random attack on a bus in Sydney's Inner West.

Emergency services were called to Addison Road near the popular Vic on the Park pub in Marrickville at around 1am this morning.

They were told on arrival a 51-year-old man had been stabbed in the arm and hand by another passenger on the bus.

It has not been confirmed what route the bus was travelling on.

Police believe the two were not known to each other.

The attacker then exited the bus and had fled the scene by the time police had arrived.

They have still not been found.

The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
