SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Springfield city leaders are fighting to restore millions of dollars in casino funding. An emergency council meeting was held on Wednesday night to discuss two proposed amendments, to restore funding that was cut earlier this year. The State Senate will vote on those resolutions Thursday.
The amendments seek to restore $3 million in state funds which is used to offset things like public safety, infrastructure, and traffic improvements within the community. Lawmakers had previously voted to reallocate and redirect money that was slated for the MGM Springfield casino mitigation fund to other statewide efforts. The state recently allocated $10 million in mitigation funding for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston.
