Menopause can be tough for many women. For those navigating this transition, doctors emphasize the importance of lifestyle changes and, for some, more targeted treatments. National Health Reporter Erin Billups has been looking into it.

Gynecologist and midlife specialist Dr. Anna Barbieri says making healthy day-to-day choices are key to a smoother menopausal transition.

“Everything starts with foundations of health, and that is food, that is movement, that is sleep and stress management,” explained Barbieri.

Prioritizing whole foods over processed ones and limiting sugar is a big part of that. Cutting back on alcohol, she says, is also key.

“Early perimenopause is marked by a time when we tolerate alcohol less,” said Barbieri. “That's why sleep may be more disrupted."
