ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - As approximately 750,000 federal employees are furloughed due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, a St. Louis couple is channeling their unexpected time off into helping others impacted by decades-old atomic bomb production.

Marvin and Ronda Taylor, furloughed federal workers from the Treasury Department in St. Louis, are volunteering at the Pink Angel Foundation, a breast cancer survivor support group. The non-profit has set up an office in Florissant to assist people in filling out lengthy applications for compensation through the federal Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) .

“Servitude is in my heart. That’s why I have 35 years of service with the federal government,” Marvin Taylor said.
