DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The current state of West Decatur Elementary School is unknown after a fire broke out on Wednesday.

According to a Decatur City Schools spokesperson, the emergency crews were sent at about 5 p.m. to respond to an HVAC fire.

Currently, the building is filled with heavy smoke.

The spokesperson said a decision about the school's status will be made at about 7:30 p.m. tonight.
