Trooper Nicholas P. "Nicky" Cayton, 40, died Oct. 16 when a semi collided with his cruiser. He was born in Canton and raised in the Carrollton area.

A memorial service for Cayton was held Oct. 22 in the Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University.

YOUNGSTOWN ‒ The mournful wail of bagpipes drifted through the cold air, their haunting notes rising and falling over the funeral procession.

Rows of uniformed officers from across the nation, hands raised in crisp salute, stood at attention as the casket of Nicholas P. "Nicky" Cayton passed, with his family following closely on Oct. 22 at the Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University.

Cayton, a 40-year-old trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, was killed Oct. 16 when a semi collided with his cruiser on state Route 11 in Mahoning
