WASHINGTON, D.C. (Gray Media Iowa State Capitol Bureau) -- Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican, has joined bipartisan criticism of President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. should import more beef from Argentina as a way to address higher prices.
Beef prices are higher by more than 50% over the past five years. Ranchers have their smallest herds in 60 years as they have dealt with drought and higher input costs.
The suggestion from Trump is his latest to support Argentina. The Trump administration was already working on $40 billion in economic aid for Argentina.
Trump is a political ally of Argentina’s President Javier Milei and has indicated that U.S. aid to Argentina may be conditional on whether Milei’s political party does well in elections this Sunday.
