The Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance is warning nearly a half-million Montana customers of Montana Blue Cross-Blue Shield that their private data, including financial information, health information, or personal information may be at risk following a major data breach, and it has launched an investigation that could affect nearly one-in-three Treasure State residents.

Montana Auditor and insurance commissioner James Brown’s office confirmed that a data breach could leave the state’s residents vulnerable, while company officials say that their data was exposed by a third-party vendor.

Brown’s office said that as many as 462,000 customers are potentially at risk because of this “major data breach.”
