The Liberals’ contortions over net zero resemble nothing so much as an intellectual exercise in insisting white is black. The positions being touted — net zero but by some arbitrary date well beyond 2050; net zero but without any meaningful policies to deliver it; ditching Labor’s 2035 targets; net zero via magical policies like carbon capture — are variations on a theme of what is by now a well-established Liberal tradition of rejecting any climate action but trying to pretend to do something.
