New B.C. drivers will soon have one less road test before getting their full driver’s licence, under changes the B.C. government is pushing through the legislature this week.
But not everyone is convinced it will make the roads safer.
The legislation would scrap the second road test for young drivers in 2026. That test currently occurs after a driver has spent two years with their novice N licence. Instead, it would be replaced by a requirement that a driver have a clean two-year record, at which point they would automatically graduate up to their full licence.
Currently, 32 per cent of drivers fail the second road test that the government intends to eliminate.
