DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - The Quad Cities area is preparing for its first widespread frost of the season.

Here are some tips to get ready for the cold .

How frost forms

Frost forms on clear, windless nights when temperatures sink close to freezing, KWQC First Alert Meteorologist Cyle Dickens said.

The temperature and dew point must meet, Dickens said, which means the air is fully saturated. Frost begins to form around sunrise as the air temperature starts to rise and when the ground temperature is near freezing.

Experts recommend applying fresh mulch to cover gardens.
