A 28-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the 2022 fatal shooting of an Uber driver.

Justin Ortega-Mejia is accused of second-degree murder in the death of 39-year-old Shaani Mohamed. A Multnomah County grand jury indicted Mejia on Oct. 10, records show.

Mohamed was killed in the vicinity of the Madison Suites motel, an area where six people have been killed since August 2021. The Oregonian/OregonLive chronicled the violence surrounding the area in July 2022 and dubbed the 8200 block of Northeast Milton Street Portland’s “deadliest.”

Officers responded to the March 27 shooting near Northeast Milton Street and 82nd Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. When they arrived, they found Mohamed, who died at the scene.
