Police in Bridgeport, Conn., were investigating Wednesday after finding a severely injured woman lying in the street , with her unharmed 1-year-old baby alone on a porch nearby.

Officers responding to a report of an abandoned baby at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday discovered the child’s mother, 24-year-old Evelyn Rayo-Mairena.

“Officers were initially dispatched to Black Rock Avenue on a report of an abandoned child on the front porch of a house ,” Det. Jeffrey Holtz told WFSB-TV and other local outlets. “They located the child and then found the mother injured on the street a short distance away.”

The baby was brought to Bridgeport Hospital for evaluation.
