CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- Temperatures are falling, which means many are cranking up the heat in their homes. But, fire agencies across Illinois are reminding people to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Champaign’s Deputy Fire Marshal called the gas the “silent killer,” adding you can’t see, smell or taste it. An estimated 400 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning across the country every year.
Mitchell said symptoms include nausea, dizziness and headache, which can easily be confused with the flu. That’s why prevention is key, according to Mitchell.
He recommends people get their furnaces, gas stoves and chimneys checked once a year, and -- most importantly -- have carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of their home.
