HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - On November 1st, people who rely on food stamps may find their EBT cards no longer working -- if Congress doesn’t reopen the government by the end of the month.

That would leave about 85,000 households in Hawaii scrambling to put food on the table.

But state officials say they have a contingency plan called the “Hawaii Relief Program” that would help at least a third of beneficiaries of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Governor Josh Green plans to tap into $110 million from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families federal grant program that provides cash to low-income families with minor children to help with basic living expenses like housing and utility bills. About 28,000 SNAP households are families with minor children.
