A new bridge may soon come up over the Hooghly River in West Bengal as part of the Varanasi-Kolkata four-lane expressway project. According to officials in the state Public Works Department (PWD), the proposed bridge would be constructed at Bagnan in Howrah district and will connect to Pujali in South 24 Parganas on the opposite bank.
Currently, Kolkata has three bridges across the Hooghly — the iconic Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu), built before Independence; Vidyasagar Setu, which links the city with NH-2 (Bombay Road); and Nivedita Setu, which connects to NH-2 ( Delhi Road). The new bridge, officials said, will serve as the fourth major link over the river.
