ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man is dead after a Cobb County police officer hit him with a stun gun on Tuesday afternoon, leading to a state investigation.

Timothy Sheats, a 47-year-old from Dallas, Georgia, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called to inspect the officer’s use of force.

The incident happened at around 6:10 p.m. when a Cobb County officer responded to a reported hit-and-run accident. According to the GBI, he found Sheats walking down the road at the scene.

Sheats said he had been shot, but the officer didn’t see any wounds. The officer asked Sheats to get into his patrol car for his safety, but the GBI said Sheats refused and instead tried to walk into traffic, allegedly trying to break into a passing vehicle
