A revolution is under way in the way the Australian Post Office delivers parcels to Canberrans.

Posties are getting off their motorbikes and into fancy new three-wheelers which can carry more parcels. In north Canberra, the roar of the post arriving is already giving way to the barely audible purr of an electric tricycle.

The decline of the posties' bike is set to spread because the replacement delivery trikes can carry around 130 parcels, much more than a post bike can take. This means that deliverers don't need to keep going back to the depot for more mail.

But it's been a task: posties liked their bikes.

"Implementing these three-wheel bikes has been quite a challenge," Ben Weatherstone, manager at the Mitchell Delivery facility, said.
