Now the second-longest government shutdown in U.S. history, the lapse in federal government funding has had major repercussions for the national park system. While the majority of national parks have been able to stay open to some degree , none are truly operating normally.

After all, what truly makes the national parks run is the dedicated rangers that staff them. Two thirds of those rangers have been furloughed, and many may never return if the newly-revealed U.S. Department of the Interior plan is enacted. Those rangers who are still working at the park are, in many instances, working without pay. It is primarily the emergency services that have been retained, such as law enforcement in the park.
