Everest winning jockey Zac Purton has joked that Maureen Haggas, the wife of UK horse trainer William Haggas, “must have been on the drink” after she labelled the accomplished rider a “big sissy”.

Renowned Australian jockey Zac Purton was on the top of the world on Saturday after winning the $20 million showpiece race at The Everest at Sydney’s exclusive Randwick Racecourse.

Mr Purton won the Group 1 TAB race aboard Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising.

He is also known as one of the greatest riders in Hong Kong history - and on Wednesday became the first ever jockey to reach 1900 wins in Hong Kong.

However, the wife of UK trainer William Haggas, Maureen Haggas, fumed at Mr Purton for placing last on her husband’s horse Lake Forest in the Everest $5 million Group 1 King Charles III Stake
