A man in his 20s has been seriously injured after the truck he was driving, which was towing a horse float, overturned on the Hume Highway in the state’s Southern Highlands.

The crash happened around 1.30pm on Thursday near Sutton Forest, between Sallys Corner Road and Penrose Forest Way, leaving the vehicle upside down and blocking multiple lanes of traffic.

Emergency crews from Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Ambulance rushed to the scene, where they worked for nearly two hours to free the trapped driver from the wreckage.

The man was stabilised at the scene before being airlifted to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police and paramedics remained at the scene throughout the afternoon as traffic backed up for several kilometres in both directions.
