PROSSER, Wash. – The Prosser Police Department is addressing public concerns over items being left in mailboxes without proper postage.

Police are reminding residents that placing flyers or non-USPS items in mailboxes without paying for postage and having them shipped is prohibited.

This rule ensures that mail can be delivered without interference from unauthorized items.

It is also against federal law to place anything but official U.S. mail in a mailbox.

Violating this law could result in fines up to $5,000 for individuals or up to $10,000 for organizations.

If residents find non-USPS items in their mailbox, they are encouraged to report it to their local post office.
