KITSAP COUNTY, Wash. — A DoorDash driver who was brutally stabbed while trying to help a stranded family has been released from the hospital, just three days after the attack that nearly killed him .

Melvin Swagerty, 60, of Port Angeles was discharged from Harborview Medical Center on Wednesday, where he had been in the intensive care unit recovering from multiple stab wounds to his face, neck, torso, back and hands.

The incident began Sunday night when Swagerty spotted two parents and their seven young children stranded along Highway 101 near Deer Park in Clallam County. He was working as a DoorDash driver when he stopped to offer them a ride.

"I'm pretty sure he just thought of his grandkids and it was like, what if that was my grandkids on the side of the road," said his daughter,
