BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - High school students in South Mississippi paid tribute to those who took their own lives after serving our country.

The Biloxi and Bay High schools JROTC programs joined local leaders for the Stand the Watch program on Wednesday.

A flag-draped coffin was on display in the Biloxi High School Sports Arena as a reminder of the sacrifices our veterans have made and to highlight the urgent need to support veterans.

According to the Harrison County Veterans Affairs, 22 veterans take their lives each day.

“Our veterans have left their homes, gone overseas, they’ve seen horrors, and they need help. Unfortunately, a lot of them don’t get the help they need, and this is what happens: suicide,” said Karen Chachere, a retired member of the U.S. Air Force.
