NEW YORK — Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Terry Rozier, guard for the Miami Heat, have been arrested as part of a federal investigation into illegal sports betting, sources confirmed on Thursday. The specific charges against both individuals have not been disclosed.

Sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, indicated that the investigation is ongoing. The NBA has not issued a comment regarding the arrests. This is not the first time Rozier has been under scrutiny; the league has previously investigated him and is also looking into former Detroit player Malik Beasley.

Rozier was in uniform during the Heat's season opener against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night but did not participate in the game. He was taken into custody early Thursday morning in Orlando. The Miami Heat has not yet commented on the situation. Rozier's attorney, Jim Trusty, was contacted for a statement but has not responded. Trusty previously mentioned that Rozier was informed after a preliminary investigation that he had not committed any wrongdoing following meetings with NBA and FBI officials in 2023.

FBI Director Kash Patel and other law enforcement officials are expected to provide further details at a news conference later today. The case is being handled by the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn, which has a history of prosecuting cases related to sports betting. Notably, they previously prosecuted former NBA player Jontay Porter, who pleaded guilty to charges related to manipulating game outcomes for betting purposes.

Billups, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame last year, has had a distinguished career as a player and coach. He led the Detroit Pistons to an NBA championship in 2004 and was named Finals MVP. Billups, 49, is in his fifth season as the Trail Blazers' head coach, with a current record of 117 wins and 212 losses. The Trail Blazers lost their season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night, 118-114.

A game involving Rozier that has raised questions took place on March 23, 2023, when the Charlotte Hornets faced the New Orleans Pelicans. Rozier played just over nine minutes before leaving the game due to a foot injury and did not return. He did not play again that season, as the Hornets were out of playoff contention. In that game, Rozier recorded five points, four rebounds, and two assists in the first quarter, which was below his typical performance.

Following Rozier's early exit, some bettors expressed frustration on social media, suggesting that there were irregularities with prop bets related to his performance that night. Prop bets allow gamblers to wager on specific player statistics, such as points, rebounds, and assists.

The investigation into Billups and Rozier continues as authorities gather more information regarding the allegations of illegal gambling.
