WEST BRANCH, MI — The West Branch Police Department is the latest Michigan law enforcement agency to partner with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

West Branch City Council members at their Monday, Oct. 20, meeting voted unanimously to approve the agreement between the city’s police force and ICE under the federal agency’s 287(g) program . One member of the council was absent.

Of the program’s three models, West Branch Police Department is participating in the Task Force option. Under it, local police can enforce “limited immigration authority while performing routine police duties, such as identifying an alien at a DUI checkpoint and sharing information directly with ICE,” according to the agency’s website .
