President Donald Trump has approved a federal disaster declaration for Alaska following widespread damage from the remnants of Typhoon Halong, which tore through Western Alaska earlier this month. The declaration unlocks federal recovery funds and assistance for the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta and other communities hardest hit by the storm.
Governor Mike Dunleavy requested the declaration after consulting directly with the president in the days after the storm. Alaska’s congressional delegation—Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, and Congressman Nick Begich—had urged swift approval, citing extensive losses to homes, businesses, runways, and utilities as winter approaches.
