SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — The City of Sun Prairie received a $96,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Carbon Reduction Program to install battery auxiliary power units in two fire engines scheduled for replacement in 2026 and 2028.

The APUs are designed to reduce engine idling by powering emergency equipment without running the vehicle’s diesel engine.

City officials say the upgrade will significantly cut fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

“Receiving this funding is a big win for the city,” said Rose Daily, sustainability and resilience manager for the City of Sun Prairie. “By reducing unnecessary idling, we’re cutting emissions, lowering fuel costs, and extending the life of our emergency vehicles – all while supporting the health of our community.”
