A family and community are rallying to help a man after he was detained by immigration officials.
Mohamed Shama, a North Carolina man from Egypt, was detained during a routine immigration hearing in Durham on Oct. 9 and taken to Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia.
His supporters say Shama has “worked tirelessly” to reobtain legal status following his divorce from his first wife but has been “trapped in a web of bureaucratic red tape.”
He has worked with the AMC theater chain for the past eight years, during which he was awarded General Manager of the Year, and has been recognized by Durham Mayor Steve Schewel for hiring people with special needs, according to a GoFundMe that has raised more than $44,000.
