Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed strong displeasure after reports emerged of individuals pouring alcohol as a tribute at the cremation site of late music icon Zubeen Garg in Sonapur.
Speaking to the press, Sarma called the acts deeply disrespectful and contrary to Zubeen’s artistic legacy. “It feels sad that people are pouring alcohol as a tribute at the cremation site. Offerings should be flowers, not tobacco or alcohol. If this becomes a ritual over time, people may start comparing him with other legends like Bishnu Rabha, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, or Bhupen Hazarika. Even Bhupen Hazarika drank alcohol, but that never became his identity — his music and broad mind defined him,” the Chief Minister stated.
He added, “We won’t let anyone distort Zubeen’s image. I will not l
