The Maple Leafs have placed defenceman Chris Tanev on injured reserve and have called up Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Marlies as the prepare for their game Friday night in Buffalo.

Tanev left Tuesday night’s game against the Devils after taking what appeared to be a helmet to the head while trying to check New Jersey’s Dawson Mercer. Tanev fell to the ice.

The move was made retroactive to Oct. 21. It means he must miss at least one week before being eligible to return to action.
