President Donald Trump continues to face public backlash over his complete teardown of the East Wing of the White House, prompting the co-hosts of "The View" to recall the uproar when Michelle Obama planted a vegetable garden.
"I want us to recognize that this is not a left or right issue," host Whoopi Goldberg said about the demolition of the White House building. "This is an issue of being an American and being able to say 'this is what we like and this is what we don't like.,' and I don't know anybody who thinks that a president should not have to go to the Senate or Congress or to someone for some oversight!"
It was revealed on Wednesday that there were no permits for tearing down the East Wing and for erecting the structure Trump has proposed. He's been talking about the project since the summer, but the plans never went through the approval process, and the president simply ordered that the construction begin.
Designer Sarah Boardman has spent the past two days on the Threads social media outlet sounding the alarm that the National Capital Planning Commission would typically be in "charge of the construction, preservation, and all plans for the White House."
"No one wants him to be able to just write a thing," Goldberg continued, alluding to Trump writing a check to do whatever he wants to the White House.
"Because you know, had Obama," Goldberg began, pausing to laugh about the double standard for Trump and former President Barack Obama. "'Can you imagine what would have happened if Obama had done this? ... Oh, wait! All Michelle did was make a vegetable garden and they lost their minds!"
In March 2009, first lady Michelle Obama planted the official White House kitchen garden as part of her ongoing effort to promote healthy eating.
Salon's Amanda Marcotte recalled the healthy-eating movement when Robert F. Kennedy Jr. entered the White House and began advocating the same policies.
CNN played clips of the responses from Fox News against the former first lady, attacking her as the "food police."
