HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) - The financial challenges faced by Hartford Public Schools could lead to the district closing some schools.
Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam on Thursday announced what he called a coordinated effort to develop plans to transform the city’s schools into “centers of excellence.”
Arulampalam noted that the district recently faced a $30 million deficit for the 2025-2026 budget year.
He also said that public school enrollment has dropped 21 percent since 2010. About half of all students who live in Hartford attend schools outside of their traditional district.
As a result, the district has been maintaining buildings that where built for twice their current enrollment.
